Glass, a mixture of quartz sand, potash or soda, heated with lime, was invented in Egypt around 9,000 years ago and has been highly prized ever since. The Egyptians and the Romans developed special techniques for the art of bead making. Glass beads were originally made to imitate semi-precious stones such as malachite and lapis lazuli.
Glass beads are very easy to care for, being impervious to temperature and humidity. They can be made in many different ways. For further information please see the Materials menu option on the left.
