Turquoise has been prized for thousands of years due to its distinctive blue-green colour. It occurs in Iran, Sinai, and various places in the Southwest United States. In California and New Mexico it was mined by pre-Columbian Native Americans using stone tools. The earliest record of turquoise being used for ornament use was in Egypt where it has been found in 6000 year old burials. In the United States the ealiest known use was 2000 years ago. Turquoise objects were traded by the Native Americans who held turquoise in high regard. Natural shaped nuggets of bright blue turquoise with black oxide veins running through are combined with antiqued copper chains for contrast in these long, elegant, funky, boho chic earrings.
